Train into Gare de Lyon, then a flight from CDG: how much time to allow?
The short answer
Add up three blocks of time: the time Paris Aéroport advises you to spend at the airport (2 hours before a short-haul flight, 3 hours before a long-haul one), the drive from Gare de Lyon (25 to 26 km and 27 to 31 minutes without traffic, no toll according to Mappy, about forty minutes according to RATP, as an indication) and the time it takes to get off the train. Worked example: for a short-haul flight at 2 pm, your train should pull in by about 10:50 am at the latest.
These durations are indicative, and rush hour stretches them. The only hard limit is the check-in closing time set by your airline: anywhere from 40 minutes to 3 hours before take-off, depending on the carrier.
Route checked on 26 October 2026 (Mappy, Paris 12th → Roissy-en-France, without traffic); Paris Aéroport advice read on 18 October 2026; RATP durations read on 18 October 2026. Sources: Mappy, Paris Aéroport, check-in, RATP, getting to CDG.
Working backwards, step by step
Gare de Lyon, in the 12th arrondissement, is where trains arrive from southern and south-eastern France, Spain, Italy and Switzerland. The useful question is not "how long is the drive" but "what is the latest my train can arrive".
Start from your flight time and count back. First take off the time Paris Aéroport recommends at the airport, then the drive: CDG lies about 25 km from central Paris, and here we use the forty-odd minutes quoted by RATP rather than Mappy's traffic-free range, which assumes an empty road. Last, take off the time needed to leave the train with your luggage: we set it at the 30 minutes of free waiting at railway stations. That does not mean getting off takes that long, only that beyond it the wait is no longer free.
| Step | Assumption: short-haul flight at 2 pm | Assumption: long-haul flight at 11 am |
|---|---|---|
| At the terminal (− 2 h or − 3 h) | 12 noon | 8 am |
| Leave Gare de Lyon (− 40 min drive) | 11:20 am | 7:20 am |
| Latest train arrival (− 30 min to leave the train) | 10:50 am | 6:50 am |
Both flight times are examples: swap in your own. The time you end up with is a limit, not a target.
What can stretch the connection
Traffic. Mappy gives 25 to 26 km and 27 to 31 minutes without traffic, no toll: that is the best case. RATP talks of about forty minutes by car between Paris and CDG. At rush hour the drive can take longer than either figure; we do not put a number on a traffic jam, but an earlier train is the only buffer that does not depend on the road.
A late train. Your train is tracked: if it runs late, the pick-up moves with it. Your flight, however, does not move. Any delay comes straight out of the margin in the table, so pick a train that arrives well before the limit.
Your terminal. CDG has three terminals, 1, 2 and 3, and Terminal 2 is split into seven halls, lettered 2A to 2G. Give us the terminal and hall printed on your ticket and the driver drops you at the right place.
Check-in closing. The 2 or 3 hours are Paris Aéroport's advice. The real deadline is your airline's, somewhere between 40 minutes and 3 hours before take-off: check it on your ticket and keep whichever of the two is more cautious.
What about public transport?
RATP gives about an hour by public transport between Paris and CDG, as an indication. From Gare de Lyon the journey involves a change; we do not go into the lines here. Run the same sum with an hour instead of the 40-minute drive, then add the time to buy a ticket and reach the platform, which we do not put a figure on.
With children, suitcases and a pushchair
Getting off a high-speed train with children takes time: gathering the bags, folding the pushchair, waiting for the aisle to clear. This is what the 30 minutes offered at the station exist for this: the driver tracks your train and starts counting only when it actually arrives.
An age-appropriate child seat is fitted by the driver, at no extra cost. For a large family or plenty of luggage, the guaranteed V-Class van takes everyone in one vehicle. This page does not describe a meeting spot inside the station: it is confirmed with you at booking.
