Giverny in a day: train and shuttle, or private driver, how much?
The short answer
For two adults and two children aged 7 to 17, the train-and-shuttle option comes to €40 in shuttle fares and €40 in admission, €80 in all, plus four Saint-Lazare ↔ Vernon-Giverny train tickets at the day's SNCF fare. With a private driver, the 6-hour day costs €545 in a van for the whole car, plus the same €40 in admission.
On price alone, the train stays cheaper as long as the four tickets add up to less than €505; the driver removes two timetables from your day and starts from your door. One last point, and it matters this week: according to the Claude Monet Foundation, the house and gardens are open from 1 April to 1 November 2026, every day. The 2026 season closes on 1 November.
Season, admission and shuttle checked on 19 October 2026; family sums worked out on 26 October 2026. Sources: giverny.org, getting to the village and giverny.org, house and gardens.
The two sums, line by line
The sums assume a typical family: two adults and two children aged 7 to 17. Four people is one more than the E-Class sedan takes (3 passengers), so on the driver side the V-Class van is the one that counts. The train fare is left out on purpose: it changes with the date and time, and we have not recorded it.
| Item | Train and shuttle | Private driver (van) |
|---|---|---|
| Paris ↔ Giverny | 4 Saint-Lazare ↔ Vernon-Giverny tickets, day's SNCF fare (not recorded) | €545 for the car: there, waiting, back |
| Station ↔ gardens | €40 (4 × €10 return) | Not needed: the car drives on to Giverny |
| House and gardens | €40 (2 × €13 + 2 × €7) | €40, not included in the package |
| Known total | €80 + the train tickets | €585 |
Train and shuttle: two timetables to keep, both ways
By public transport, the route is a train from Saint-Lazare to Vernon-Giverny station, under 45 minutes on the fastest services, then a shuttle bus from spring to autumn. Giverny lies 75 km west of Paris, 4 km from Vernon: the shuttle covers that last stretch, at €10 return per person.
The cost stays low, but the day is built around two timetables. On the way out, you first get to Saint-Lazare with the children, then catch the shuttle at Vernon, which runs to its own schedule. On the way back the order flips: leave the gardens in time for the shuttle, then for your chosen train. Getting to Saint-Lazare and waiting on the platform come on top of the train time; we do not put a figure on them, since they depend on your hotel and the day's connections.
Train tickets are bought from SNCF at the fare shown for your date. The page we read gives no child fare for the shuttle, so the sums count four returns at the same price.
The private driver: six hours, door to door
The Giverny package lasts 6 hours from your address in Paris: the drive there, your time on site while the driver waits, then the drive back. For the road, Mappy gives 75 to 80 km and 1 hr 09 min to 1 hr 16 min without traffic each way. If the six hours run from departure to return, that leaves about 3 hr 28 min to 3 hr 42 min in Giverny: a calculation, not a recommended visit length.
The price is for the whole car, tolls included, set before departure and the same at any hour. Up to 3 travellers, the E-Class sedan is enough; for four, the guaranteed V-Class van seats up to 7 passengers with their luggage. The driver drives and waits, but does not go into the house with you or buy the tickets.
The 2026 season and the Foundation's opening hours
Claude Monet's house and gardens are not open all year. According to the Foundation, the 2026 season runs from 1 April to 1 November 2026, every day. This page was written on 26 October 2026: only a few days remain before closing on 1 November, and the Vernon shuttle, too, only runs from spring to autumn.
For a trip in 2027, we have not yet recorded any opening dates: check them on the Claude Monet Foundation's website before booking a train or a driver. The day's opening time differs between official pages, so we do not give one. See the Foundation's practical information to set your departure time.
What changes with younger children
Entry is free under 7. With two younger children, you only pay for the two adults, 2 × €13; the shuttle, though, stays counted per person in our sums, as the source we read publishes no child fare.
By car, an age-appropriate child seat is included, fitted by the driver at no extra cost: give each child's age in your request. The van has room for a pushchair and the picnic bag. By train, all of that is carried from one platform to the next, then onto the shuttle.
The Giverny day trip package, by vehicle
The price covers the car and driver for 6 hours, waiting on site, tolls and parking, and the child seat; cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pick-up. The Foundation's admission stays at your expense. The full shape of the day is on the page Giverny day trip with a private driver.
