Booked early, a single from Saint-Lazare to Trouville-Deauville costs from €17 per person; bought at the last minute, the best fares we saw ran from €33 to 42 one way, and €320 for four people there and back at the same-day fare. The train takes 2 h 15 at best and 2 h 41 on average, with 8 departures a day, some of them with a change at Lisieux. By road, Mappy gives 2 h to 2 h 53 without traffic jams, from your door to the address you choose.

The sums for two and for four
Every train ticket is paid per traveller and per journey; the car is paid once, however many people ride in it. On the train side, the table counts one outward and one return journey on the same day, in 2nd class. On the Precelya side, it shows our list price for the car: the exact arrangement is confirmed with your request, so this amount is not presented here as a round trip.

For two or for four, the train stays cheaper, even bought late. What the table leaves out: getting from your hotel to Saint-Lazare, the walk from the station into town, and the time of the last evening train, which the whole day has to fit around.
What a private driver changes, compared with a taxi or an app
A private driver gives his time to your ride: he takes no ride before yours, prepares and cleans the car, tracks your flight and stands at arrivals holding your name, then helps with the luggage. If the plane lands an hour late, he is still there; if the delay stretches on, he stays or we replace him. The driving is calm and safe. These commitments are written here in black and white; a metered ride or an app estimate carries none of them.

The train from Saint-Lazare: the right call for two who book ahead
Regional TER trains to Normandy, Deauville included, leave from Gare Saint-Lazare. SNCF Connect lists 8 trains a day between Paris and Trouville-Deauville station, over 221 km of track. The fastest takes 2 h 15, the average is 2 h 41: some journeys involve a change at Lisieux.
Out of the station, allow a 10 to 15 minute walk to reach the centre, on the Deauville side or the Trouville side. For two people travelling light, staying near Saint-Lazare and booking ahead, it is the cheapest option: from €17 one way on the trains and dates where that fare is offered.
The picture changes when tickets are bought late. For travel on the day we checked and the two days after, the best fares shown ranged from €33 to 42 one way. We give no return time: pick one on SNCF Connect for your date, because it sets the end of your day.
The private driver: one price for the car, at the time you choose
By road, Mappy gives 188 to 203 km from Paris 8th and 2 h to 2 h 53 without traffic jams, depending on the route. Tolls range from €3 to €24.60 depending on the road taken; in a Precelya price they are included, and so is parking.
The driver collects you from your hotel or your address, at the time you set, and drops you where you asked. No change at Lisieux, no platform to find: suitcases, pushchair and children stay on board from start to finish. If you would like to stop in Honfleur or Trouville on the way, put it in your request: the driver drops you off, then picks you up again at the agreed time. A stop added on the way without being planned is not included.

Four of you with children: what tips the balance
A family of four is too many for the sedan (3 passengers): the guaranteed V-Class van applies, taking up to 7 passengers and 7 pieces of luggage. An age-appropriate child seat is fitted by the driver at no extra cost: give each child's age in your request.
By train, the same family carries bags and pushchair from Saint-Lazare to the carriage, sometimes from one train to another at Lisieux, then walks from the station into town. If budget comes first, the train clearly wins; if the day should start and end at your own front door, the car makes the difference.
