Boarding a cruise in Le Havre: train or private driver from Paris, with the cruise luggage?

The short answer

On price, the train wins: from €17 per person when booked early, €40 when bought on the day, which makes €80 for two and €160 for four, one way. But it leaves you at the station, 2.5 km from the cruise terminal, with your cases in hand. A private driver costs €579 in a sedan and €669 in a van, for the car and one way, from your hotel door to the Pointe de Floride terminal.

The train takes 1 hr 59 min at the shortest and 2 hr 12 min on average, with 16 departures a day from Saint-Lazare. By road, Mappy gives 198 to 224 km and 2 hr 13 min to 3 hr 15 min without traffic, depending on the route.

Trains, journey times and fares read on 28 October 2026 ("from" prices, one way, 2nd class); terminal, distance and shuttles read on 19 October 2026; road route checked on Mappy on 19 October 2026, as an indication. The sums for two and for four, one way

A train ticket is paid per traveller; the car is paid once, however many people are in it. Both columns count a single journey, Paris to Le Havre, on embarkation day.

Train: "from" prices on selected trains and dates; the same-day line is the best price shown on 28 October 2026 for a departure that day. The leg from Le Havre station to the terminal is not counted: its price is not published. Private driver: price-list fare for the car, one way, hotel to terminal.

Private driver

What a private driver changes, compared with a taxi or an app

A private driver gives his time to your ride: he takes no ride before yours, prepares and cleans the car, tracks your flight and stands at arrivals holding your name, then helps with the luggage. If the plane lands an hour late, he is still there; if the delay stretches on, he stays or we replace him. The driving is calm and safe. These commitments are written here in black and white; a metered ride or an app estimate carries none of them.

For the price gap shown, you are buying peace of mind: a driver who has only you, a car that is ready, and nobody to look for on arrival.

Why a private driver rather than Uber, Bolt or a taxi: the full answer.

The train from Saint-Lazare, then the last stretch

Trains to Le Havre leave from Gare Saint-Lazare, the Paris station for regional trains to Normandy. According to SNCF Connect, 16 trains a day run the 228 km of track: the first leaves Paris at 5:46 am, the last at 8:40 pm. Some are direct; others change at Rouen.

What the ticket does not cover is both ends of the trip. Before boarding, you have to reach Saint-Lazare from your hotel, then wheel the cruise cases to the platform and lift them onto the train. On arrival, the Pointe de Floride terminal is 2.5 km from the station. According to the tourist office, shuttles link the cruise terminal with the town centre, and there is a taxi rank (no fare given): allow for that step, the wait and the cost, which we have not checked.

A private driver: from your hotel door to the terminal

The driver collects you at your hotel or address in Paris and drops you in front of the cruise terminal. Your boarding deadline is printed on your cruise documents: put it in your request and the departure time is set around it. At the hotel, waiting is free for 15 minutes.

The driver loads the cases: help with luggage on arrival and departure is part of the price, like tolls and parking. The E-Class sedan takes 3 passengers and 3 pieces of luggage; the guaranteed V-Class van, 7 passengers and 7 pieces. Two couples with two large cases each come to eight: give the exact number of cases and bags in your request, and the vehicle is confirmed with the price.

The fare is the price-list amount for the car, the same by day or night, confirmed before the ride. No change at Rouen, no platform, no last stretch to sort out in Le Havre.

When the train is the better choice

The train makes sense if you travel alone or as a couple, with light luggage, tickets booked early and a boarding time that leaves room to spare. Staying near Saint-Lazare spares you most of the trip across Paris. On SNCF Connect, pick a train that arrives well ahead of the deadline on your documents, counting the leg from the station to the terminal.

For four, with eight cases and a time set by the ship, the picture changes: the train is still cheaper, but the car removes the two steps the ticket leaves out, and it is the car that fits the ship's timetable.

Disembarkation: the same price the other way

The return from Le Havre to Paris costs the same, for the car. The pick-up time at the terminal exit is agreed in advance, based on the disembarkation time your cruise line gives you; the driver waits for you there, with 15 minutes of free waiting. We promise nothing about when the ship lets its passengers off: if the time changes, let us know.

As a family

As a family: children, seats and cases

In France, a suitable child seat is compulsory up to age 10. With Precelya, an age-appropriate child seat is fitted by the driver at no extra cost: give each child's age. A family of four is too many for the sedan; the guaranteed van carries everyone and the luggage, with no platform and no shuttle.
